NREL opens Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF)

R&R Engineers – Surveyors, Inc. is proud to have been a part of the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) project recently opened on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) campus in Golden, Colorado. R&R provided surveying and civil engineering services with the highest level of precision, as required for such specialized and complex equipment. ESIF simulates the electric power grid in order to analyze the impact of renewable and disturbed energy source and electric vehicles on the grid. The 185,000 sqft. facility includes indoor and outdoor test areas, a state-of-the-art super computer, and uses a 1-megawatt solar energy inverter to get it’s juice. Beyond academic and government research, the private sector is anxious to make use of the facility, including Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing – North America which plans to test the integration of plug-in electric vehicles with ESIF.
